How P4Health Is Funded

P4Health operates under three complementary funding streams, each covering a different aspect of the center’s growth and sustainability. Together, they make it possible to build infrastructure, recruit world-class researchers, and develop the technological capacity that precision medicine requires—at a scale that no single program could support alone. 


Teaming for Excellence — Horizon Europe (European Union)

The Teaming for Excellence grant, awarded under the Horizon Europe Widening program (call HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-ACCESS-01), provides the structural and infrastructural foundation for P4Health as a Centre of Excellence. The program is specifically designed to help research organizations in EU widening countries build world-class capacity by partnering with leading European institutions. 

P4Health’s Teaming grant supports the development of five technological platforms, the establishment of governance structures, community engagement and patient involvement programs, industry liaison activities, and the long-term strategy for the center’s financial self-sustainability. King’s College London and CERBM serve as advanced partners. 

The Teaming for Excellence project runs through 2030, with the goal of establishing P4Health as a legally independent Centre of Excellence by the end of the project period.

International Research Agenda (MAB) — Foundation for Polish Science

The MAB program, funded by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) under the Polish Operational Programme Smart Growth co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FENG 2021–2027), supports P4Health’s scientific research agenda. It finances research group leaders, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and equipment—giving the center the scientific personnel and tools to pursue internationally competitive research. 

The MAB program at P4Health is led by Prof. Bastian Hengerer and covers the research activities of the Biology of Astrocytes Research Group, integrated within the broader P4Health research framework across neurobiology, oncology, and translational psychiatry. The program runs through December 2029.

Complementary Funding — Polish Ministry of Science

The third funding stream comes from the Polish Ministry of Science as complementary support to the Teaming for Excellence project, running from 2025 to 2030. It covers additional infrastructure, personnel, and operational costs and reflects the Polish government’s recognition of P4Health as a strategic investment in the country’s research and innovation capacity.

Long-term sustainability 

The three programs together represent a substantial investment in P4Health over the project period. P4Health’s sustainability strategy extends beyond 2030: revenue from research services, industrial contracts, and collaborative projects is designed to progressively reduce dependence on grant funding.
