From a Single Project to a Center of Excellence 

P4Health—Centre of Excellence for Precise Phenotyping and BioDataBanking—is a research center based in Wrocław, Poland, operating within Łukasiewicz – PORT, one of the leading research and development institutes in Central Europe. 

Healthcare is changing. The old model—one drug, one treatment, one answer for everyone—is giving way to medicine that is predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory. That shift requires infrastructure that can gather complex biological data, make sense of it, and connect it to real patients and real diseases. P4Health was built to do exactly that. 

The center grew out of the Life Science and Biotechnology Center at Łukasiewicz – PORT, where a group of internationally experienced researchers had been building expertise in oncology, neurobiology, and translational research since 2018. That foundation expanded into a formally recognized Centre of Excellence, co-funded by the European Union and two complementary Polish programs. The Centre integrates research groups and five technological platforms, and collaborates with research institutions in the United Kingdom and France. 

P4Health sits at the intersection of science, clinical practice, and industry. It handles the whole path: clinical sample collection and biobanking, spatial and computational pathology, multiomics bioanalytics, disease model validation, and cell engineering for future therapies. The five technological platforms work as a connected system rather than isolated services. 

This integration is intentional. Diseases like cancer and brain disorders are not solved by one technique or one team. They require coordinated, large-scale analysis of patient material—and the ability to act on what that analysis reveals. 

Wrocław, Poland, and the wider network 

P4Health is part of Łukasiewicz – PORT, which itself belongs to the Łukasiewicz Research Network—26 research institutes across Poland. Working from the Pracze Campus in Wrocław, P4Health has access to shared infrastructure, administrative support, and a community of researchers across disciplines including materials science, environmental engineering, and diagnostics. 

Internationally, P4Health works with King’s College London (KCL) and the Centre Européen de Recherche en Biologie et en Médecine (CERBM) in Strasbourg as its founding advanced partners. These partnerships shape the center’s recruitment model, research agenda, technology transfer approach, and training programs. 

P4Health also leads BBMRI.pl—Poland’s national biobanking consortium—and operates as a node within BBMRI-ERIC, the pan-European biobanking infrastructure, recognized with the BBMRI-ERIC Quality Label Award in 2025. This position gives P4Health direct access to European networks, data-sharing frameworks, and regulatory discussions shaping the future of biomedical research across the continent. 

Focused on cancer and brain health 

P4Health’s research concentrates on two disease areas where the need for personalized approaches is most acute: oncology and neuropsychiatry. Cancer mortality in Poland ranks among the highest in the EU. Brain and psychiatric disorders affect an estimated 14% of the European population, with annual costs of care approaching €800 billion.

These figures shape the center’s research priorities—and the standard against which its work will ultimately be measured.
