Biobanking at P4Health 

A biobank is a structured collection of human biological material—tissue, blood, DNA, and associated data—stored under controlled conditions for use in future scientific research. At P4Health, biobanking is the starting point of the entire scientific workflow, not a support service at the margins. 


What a biobank is, and why it matters 

The Łukasiewicz – PORT Biobank, which operates through P4Health’s Clinical and Biobanking Platform (P1), is among the largest repositories of human biological material in Poland. It stores samples from population-wide studies and disease-focused research programs, at −80°C and −150°C in a continuously monitored system with emergency backup power and liquid nitrogen reserves. In 2025, it received the BBMRI-ERIC Quality Label Award—recognition of its standards within the pan-European biobanking network. 

The value of a biobank lies not just in what it stores, but in how well that material is characterized. Samples connected to detailed, anonymized clinical data—diagnoses, treatment histories, outcomes—allow researchers to ask questions that would otherwise be unanswerable: Why do some patients respond to a therapy while others do not? What biological markers predict disease progression before symptoms appear? Can the pattern of proteins in a blood sample reveal what is happening in the brain? 

These are the questions that precision medicine depends on. They can only be answered with the right samples, collected from enough people, over a long enough period. 


How P4Health approaches biobanking 

P4Health’s biobanking work rests on three commitments. 

Scientific quality

Samples are collected, processed, and stored according to OECD guidelines and international quality standards. The biobank participates in BBMRI-ERIC quality assurance programs, and standard operating procedures are developed in collaboration with research groups and with partners at King’s College London and CERBM. 

Ethical rigor

All sample collection and storage proceeds under approved bioethical protocols, with full informed consent from donors. A data protection officer oversees GDPR compliance, and anonymization procedures ensure individual donors cannot be identified through their stored material. 

Partnership with donors

Biological material is a gift from one person to future medicine. P4Health treats it as such. The PPIE program ensures that donors understand how their samples are used, that patient organizations have a role in shaping how the biobank develops, and that research priorities reflect genuine health needs.


Who can use the biobank? 

The P4Health biobank is progressively being opened for collaborative use by academic researchers, clinical institutions, and industry partners. Access is governed by a scientific review process, ethical approval requirements, and material transfer agreements.
